The Dark Bathroom

So we have set the stage to ban the incandescent light bulb.  Just so you folks who are for this thing are aware, be prepared to go to the bathroom at night in near darkness.  CF bulbs take a while to warm up, I found this out the hard way when I installed one.  For certain places they may be OK but I am not sure they are what you want to hang your hat on.  What about security lights?  Do you want something that takes up to a minute to fully illuminate?  What about other places where you need light immediately.  The color of light they produce is also an issue.  The frequency and tone can increase the stress in your life not to mention they aren't color true.  If you decorate your house, things won't look the same.  Honestly I think there is probably more of a future for the LED.  Normal LED's can last virtually a lifetime (partly why they may not get promoted), they are immediate and can be pretty bright.  The cost and probably the challenge to make them so that they have a lifespan are probably what will slow their introduction.  The nay sayers out there will find something wrong with every single means to increase power output, wind, solar, hydro, nuclear, geothermal, you name it some green group will block with lawsuits on every one with barking shrimp or farting cockroaches.  If we stop illegal immigration and just wait 20 years our declining population will take care of the problem all by itself.

Tale of 3 curves

Iran, specifically their current regime poses a problem for a good portion of the world.  Led by mullahs bent on obtaining nuclear weapons and with a means to control their population for the most part in the form of "Islamism".  We know the story.  I think it is catching a virus though.  It is called "AIDS" Acquired Islamist Deficiency Syndrome.  So what is this second form of AIDS?  It is the fact that despite the restrictions and roadblocks the Iranian government throws up to suppress their population the youth continue to gain contact with the outside world and see things for what they are.  So what about these curves?  As the mullahs age, they will begin to weaken, they are still some distance from nuclear weapons so we are told, but the youth are on the rise and will tire of living backwards suppressed lives eventually.  As the youth rise the mullahs will eventually fall.  Hopefully time is on our side and peacefully things transition such that Persians will again be free members of the world, no longer threatening and unduly influencing their neighbors.  Time is on our side if only the nuke problem can be delayed for the other curves to meet.

Second Post confirms my First

Sen Inhofe of OK has released a great report debunking Global Warming.

It sounds like both the empirical data and some reasonable minds are finally getting it and seeing this hysteria for what it is.  There is still some inertia left in the GW movement but it looks like there is traction now going the other way.  The problem is that this environmentalism is essentially a religion to some people now and the sacred cow is now bleeding profusely.  Hopefully it is a fatal wound and we can move on.  Plant 3 trees and know that you can live without guilt.

Global Warming and the Climatologist

I have a BS in Geography.  Part of the core to get a Geoscience degree at the university I attended was courses like Climatology, Geomorphology, Environmental Conservation among others.  I would consider myself better informed then the average person who just watches the news.  People should really take a wait and see approach to this without resorting to extreme measures.  There are some really simple things you can do if it bothers you.  First don't buy the hype.  There is no empirical evidence of the cause for the earth to warm.  Lots of things aside from humans cause this - the obvious one and rarely mentioned is the Sun.  Ever heard of the global radiation budget?  What that is simply is that the Sun transmits X amount of energy that is absorbed by earth.  This is a constant to the side of the planet exposed to the Sun, the opposite side of the earth is transmitting energy out in the form of long wave IR energy.  So it comes in as UV or other high frequency energy and goes out as low frequency.  When those don't balance you get an increase in temperature.  That is just one of many many factors.  Look into some of the other things.  Don't sweat your "carbon load"  if that bothers you go plant 3 trees a year somewhere.  Don't buy the American's are at fault business either.  Lots of other countries and places that generate plenty of pollution.  Mexico City for example is extremely dirty.  Geography also has a huge impact on the pollution level of a city - LA is the worst place to build a big city.  It is essentially a huge bowl open to the ocean with a persistant onshore flow that basically traps air pollution in the bowl.   No good natural source of fresh water either.  Lots of things folks consider problems all eventually work out.  Be a skeptic, don't buy into draconian responses and be suspicious of environmental organizations.  Follow the money, it isn't always nice old widows trying to keep birds in their backyards.
